With more than 30 years of experience, John G. Mitchell possesses a thorough understanding of the law and the litigation skills necessary to deliver effective results to businesses and individuals facing a wide range of environmental and toxic tort actions. Mr. Mitchell has been an asset to Secrest Wardle since 1986 and is currently an Executive Partner. He is a member of the Firm’s Environmental and Toxic Tort, Drug and Medical Device, and Product Liability Practice Groups. Mr. Mitchell also acts as Chair of the Construction Practice Group and a Chair of the Malpractice/Professional Liability Practice Group.
Mr. Mitchell has an incredible amount of successful defense experience in the courtroom. Adept at dealing with complex litigation, he has handled numerous significant cases involving hundreds of plaintiffs and millions of dollars.
Mr. Mitchell has been involved significantly and essentially from the outset, in claims regarding injury (personal injury and property damage) due to exposure to mold and due to workplace exposure to allegedly toxic chemicals, such as metalworking fluids. As to the former, he was counsel involved in developing testimony to support Daubert-based motions that there is no credible science to support neurotoxicity claims. As to the latter, he served as managing counsel for mass tort claims involving hundreds of plaintiffs.
With respect to his involvement in the Indoor Air Quality Association, and in particular the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization (IESO), Mr. Mitchell served on the IESO Consensus Body. The consensus body oversaw the development of industry standards and, in particular, at that time, it was attempting to set standards as it pertains to indoor air quality for things such as mold, arsenic, and other potential environmental hazards. Previously, Mr. Mitchell was appointed a member of the Writing Group, for the IESO, involved in developing a codified standard for preliminary evaluation and testing of contaminated sites.
Mr. Mitchell was a featured speaker at the MIHS 2010 Mini-Conference where he presented on the topic of Legal Issues of Significance to Industrial Hygiene Professionals.
Mr. Mitchell earned his Juris Doctor, (cum laude) from Wayne State University in 1986 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Michigan State University in 1977. He was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1987, the Bar for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in 1987, and the Bar for the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan in 1997. Mr. Mitchell has been accorded the prestigious "AV" rating by Martindale- Hubbell and was named to business magazine's list of "Top Lawyers in Metro Detroit" in 2010.
